ACORN office staff

ACORN is currently seeking Administrators (Project managers/Project leaders) to join their team in Sulaimany, Northern Iraq. Applicants must possess Team leadership, Management & Accounting skills. This is a voluntary position, and may be short or long-term.

English Teachers (TESOL & ESP) and Information Technology professionals (skilled in office networking/ training local staff) are also being sought to train local staff in Sulaimany, Northern Iraq. These are voluntary positions and may be short or long term.


Special Education Programme

The Special Education Programme has been set up to assist children with disabilities in Northern Iraq. It includes an Early Intervention project, an Inclusive Schools project (for primary schools) and a Family Support group project. ACORN is working with the local Ministry of Education to support children who have special learning needs.

Special Education Programme Assistant

The ACORN Special Education Team is looking for an assistant based in Sulaimany, Northern Iraq to help with project administration and co-ordination tasks. Skills required include basic computer skills (using internet, Microsoft Office),administrative experience,organisational skills (ie. Time management, planning), Initiative, flexibility and good sense of humour! The assistant would work in co-ordination with the Special Education Teacher/Trainers to plan and co-ordinating training events, prepare training materials, manage correspondence, organise purchasing, develop and resources. This is a short-term, voluntary position. In-country accommodation and assistance with living expenses available.

Special Education Teachers (intellectual disabilities and/or learning difficulties)

The Special Education team is seeking qualified and experienced Special Education teachers to assist with their current project in Sulaimany. Teachers would be involved in training local staff members in specific areas of expertise, such as working with children with intellectual disabilities or learning difficulties. Teachers may also oversee the local staff members’ work. This position is available short or long-term, and is voluntary. Assistance with air-fares, living expenses, and in-country accommodation may be available.

Teachers & Therapists for children with hearing & visual impairments

The Special Education team is seeking teachers or therapists who have qualifications and experience in working with children who have hearing and visual impairments. Teachers or therapists would be involved in training local staff members in specific areas of expertise, such as communication or mobility training. They may also be asked to give seminars to local schools in their field. This is a short term consultancy position, and is voluntary. Assistance with air-fares, living expenses, and in-country accommodation may be available.

Child Psychologists (Educational or Developmental Psychologists)

The Special Education team is seeking qualified and experienced Psychologists (Educational/Developmental/Child Psychologists) to assist with their current project. The Psychologist would be involved in training local psychologists and school counselors. They may also be asked to assist with designing or evaluating research on current projects, and overseeing family support projects. This position is available short or long term, and is voluntary. Assistance with air-fares, living expenses, and in-country accommodation may be available.

Speech Therapist (Speech & Language Pathologist)

The Special Education team is seeking qualified and experienced Speech Therapists (Speech Pathologists) to assist with their current project. Hanen training would be desirable, as well as training and experience in augmentative and alternative communication, and feeding issues. The Speech Therapist would be involved in training local staff, and may be involved in assisting with the setting up a Speech Therapy Training Course within Northern Iraq. This position may be a short-term consultancy or may be long-term, and is voluntary. Assistance with air-fares, living expenses, and in-country accommodation may be available.

Occupational Therapist

The Special Education team is seeking qualified and experienced Occupational Therapists (pediatric) to assist with their current project. The Occupational Therapist would be involved in training local staff and in assisting with the setting up an Occupational Therapy Training Course within Northern Iraq. This position may be a short-term consultancy or a long-term position, and is voluntary. Assistance with air-fares, living expenses, and in-country accommodation may be available.

MOVE (Mobility Opportunities via Education) Trainer

The Special Education team is seeking a qualified and experienced MOVE trainer to assist with their current project. The trainer would be involved in training local staff who work with children with disabilities. This position would be a short-term consultancy position based in Sulaimanya, Northern Iraq, and is voluntary. Assistance with air-fares, living expenses, and in-country accommodation may be available.

Physiotherapy Training Programme

Physiotherapists (Physical Therapists)

Qualified physiotherapists are currently being sought to assist with the training of local physiotherapists. Experience in either pediatric or adult physiotherapist and a willingness to train others is necessary. This is a voluntary position based in Sulaimany, Northern Iraq.


Children’s Rehabilitation Work

ACORN is seeking the following qualified and experienced staff to train local staff in the Children's Rehabilitation Centre located in Sulaimany, Northern Iraq.

· Orthopaedic Technicians
· Medical Doctors (Paediatricians, Orthopaedic Surgeons & Rehabilitation Specialists)
· Nurses (post-orthopaedic surgery & children's continence training experience)
· Audiologist
· Occupational Therapists


Supplementary to the above programme staff we are currently inviting applications for a Home School Assistant. This person must possess childcare training and/or experience. Duties include supervising home school program, some child minding, and assisting with some household chores in a family of international NGO staff. ACORN is also seeking a qualified and experienced Preschool Teacher to train local staff to work with young children in a model preschool based in Sulaimany, Northern Iraq. These positions are both voluntary and require fluency in English.
